Getting to Know Our Local Trees with a Social Justice Lens
Professor Audrey Lindsey
AMST 103: Introduction to Social Justice
Modality: In-person
“Without the trees, there would be no park, no shade, no beautiful flowers. The landscape would look dead in a way, or plain”
“The reason I feel rushed in certain environments is the same reason the only trees that can exist in these environments are the London Planetree- these environments that prioritize money, “efficiency,” profits, and production are toxic for natural growth[.  It takes] a high level of resistance and endurance from us (and the trees) to lay our roots/grow. I believe that I’m meant to feel anxious or rushed in certain areas and that I’m meant to feel more comfortable and at home in others.”
Assignment Description and/or actual assignment: This nature-based learning experience was situated within a scaffolded paper assignment in which students described their relationship with the city.  To explore their relationship with the city in preparation for writing this paper, students quantified their ways of moving through public space, particularly within and around parks.  They also made quantitative and qualitative observations of trees.
